DETROIT -- Chrysler LLC has named John Kett vice president for Asia operations. Kett replaces Asia veteran Phil Murtaugh, who left the company last month.
Kett will be responsible for sales and marketing in Asia and will play a pivotal role in aligning Chryslers business functions in the region, according to a company statement issued Friday, Jan. 16.
In China, Chrysler is the weakest of the Detroit 3 because it lacks a Chinese joint-venture production partner. Chrysler had a tentative deal with Chery Automobile Co. to produce cars for export, but that deal collapsed in early December.
Kett will report to Mike Manley, Chrysler executive vice president of international sales and global product planning operations.
Kett joined Chrysler this monthas director for finance and controlling. He came to Chrysler from Ssangyong Motor in Korea, where he was CFO. Before that he had been CFO of General Motors China Group.
The announcement comes as Chrysler is negotiating with Italys Fiat on a broad product-sharing alliance.
