DETROIT -- Is there a roadster in Kias future? At the Detroit auto show today, the wraps came off the Soulster concept, a ragtop version of the new Soul small car that Kia will bring out this spring.
The exterior is similar to the production model Soul, but the Soulster has its own personality. It has two doors, compared with four on the Soul, and a two-piece top that allows the front and back seat areas to be opened independently. The concept has bold, 19-inch wheels and dual chrome and aluminum exhaust tips.
Also, the Soulster is a four-seater. The Soul has five seats. The concepts passenger and rear seats fold flat for more cargo area. Storage compartments are below the rear seats.
Like the Soul, the Soulster is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 120 hp or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 140 hp.
Says Tom Kearns, Kia Motor Americas chief designer: Soulster delivers something new, intriguing and relevant to todays buyers -- a fun, affordable convertible for active people who like to share good times with friends.
