Canada light-vehicle sales increased 1.7 percent in September compared with the same month last year, with 134,142 vehicles sold.
For the first nine months of 2008, sales rose 1.5 percent from the year-earlier period to 1,314,983.
General Motors sold the most vehicles in Canada in September, despite a 6.9 percent drop to 30,818. Ford slipped from third in total sales in August to fifth in September. Its sales fell 9.7 percent to 13,519.
Sales at Toyota, the No. 2 automaker, rose 14.9 percent to 19,413.
Daimler AG saw the largest September percentage gain, jumping 54.5 percent to 2,101.
Sales rose by double-digit percentages at Nissan, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Suzuki.
