LOS ANGELES -- Hyundai Motor America cracked the 50,000 sales mark in June, the first time in company history.
With strong sales of its Accent, Sonata and Elantra cars, dealers sold 50,033 units last month. That is up 1.3 percent or 665 units from June 2007, the automakers previous best month at 49,368.
The mid-sized Sonata was the sales leader at 16,875, up 11.9 percent over June 2007.
Sales of the subcompact Accent soared 70 percent to 6,914, and sales of the compact Elantra rose 50.6 percent to 14,482 sales.
As consumers continue to shift to smaller cars, our most fuel-efficient vehicles -- Accent, Elantra and Sonata -- continue their upward trend, said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundais vice president of sales. We are very pleased with our record-setting results for June and look forward to building on this trend.
Sales of all Hyundai trucks and the sporty Tiburon car were down sharply. The Azera large sedan fell 3.4 percent.
June was the first month for sales of Hyundais new rear-wheel-drive premium Genesis sedan. Dealers sold 30 of those cars.
