TYNE AND WEAR, England -- Electric van and truck manufacturer Smith Electric Vehicles plans to build 10,000 zero-emission electric trucks a year in the United States by 2010. The company is searching for a U.S. site of up to 300 acres to build a 500,000-square-foot assembly plant, test track and space for rolling stock. Smith already has a 70,000-square-foot plant in Fresno, Calif., with a 1,000-vehicle production capacity.
