To the Editor:
I am responding to Alan Mulally's comment that CAFE is "the stupidest policy ever created in the history of mankind" ("Hard-rocked CAFE: Mulally blows off steam," Nov. 5).
It's here! It has finally happened. We are witnessing a major shift in re-evaluating our stand on emissions controls. And it's coming from none other than the CEO of Ford Motor Co.
I guess it takes a noncar guy to tell the industry and the Feds what has been evident to the rest of the world for decades.
Tax gasoline. Likewise cigarettes and alcohol. Not in the same year, but gradually. Let consumers choose what they want (or can afford) to drive. The industry will adjust itself to the only principle of capitalism: supply and demand. The industry then will build what the consumer wants.
