You might not expect a quest to hit an EPA mileage number to be called "emotional." But that's how Larry Nitz describes the work of hundreds of General Motors engineers who developed the Two Mode Hybrid powertrain.
The hybrid system, which debuted in the 2008 Chev-rolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, gives the SUVs fuel economy of 21 mpg city and 22 highway with two-wheel drive and 20 mpg city and highway with four-wheel drive. The transmission uses two electric motors and four forward speeds. Staff Reporter Leslie J. Allen spoke with Nitz about the Two Mode as he flew to Baltimore recently to see the first transmission come off the assembly line.
