J Mays took over the top design job at Ford Motor Co. 10 years ago last month. Looking back at the last decade, Mays rates his performance a B+ and says, "I still haven't done everything I wanted."
His future now is about injecting more emotion into Ford's vehicle lineup, he says.
"We're now finally having the confidence to stop racing after every new fad and focus on making consistent, emotional connections with our customers."
Name: J Carroll Mays
Age: 53, "unfortunately"
Title: Ford's group vice president of design and chief creative officer
Education: Graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., in 1980.

Big break: "Flunking out of journalism school. I thought I was going to run a small newspaper at some point. But I absolutely hated it. When I found out about the Art Center and realized a grown man might be able to make a living drawing cars, it changed my life. That was my ticket out of Oklahoma."
