BOSTON - The world's two largest car-sharing companies, Zipcar, of Cambridge, Mass., and Flexcar, of Seattle, have merged. The companies will operate out of Zipcar headquarters under the direction of Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith. The merger of the two privately held companies creates a fleet of about 5,500 vehicles and a membership base of about 180,000. The companies provide car-rental services in which members pay an annual fee and rent vehicles by the hour, making reservations online or by telephone.
