Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, discussed Mercedes-Benz USA's goals in an interview last week at the Tokyo motor show with Staff Reporter Diana T. Kurylko.
Zetsche: Profits matter, not sales
It isn't totally out of reach. It isn't a new number on my side.
But I have said it again and again: We are not driven by unit sales numbers. I don't see the benefit in itself. Profits are what we strive for. Growth is one element. One problem in our industry is too many of the players are focusing on unit sales and sacrificing profits and margins.
I was somewhat involved, and so far I am happy with my choice. I do believe that Ernst (Lieb) does understand the relevance of the dealer body. He sees that having strong communications with your dealers goes together with getting the best results.
We do not have the best (dealership) facilities, and the facilities give you some first impression of the brand. There is room to improve. When you want to see new facilities, you have to make it attractive to your dealers, which is what we are doing.
We have good products, we have a strong brand. We have very attractive prices in worldwide comparison. We have room to further grow with a good management team in place.
