Randy Pflughaupt, Toyota Division's new vice president of marketing, did not work his way up through the company's marketing department. In typical Toyota fashion, he rotated through various departments, including sales, service and distribution. He managed operations in Toyota's San Francisco and Los Angeles regions.
That's not to say Pflughaupt (Flew-off), 48, lacks marketing experience. In the regions, Pflughaupt dealt with Toyota's dealer advertising associations and local ad agencies. And Pflughaupt's stint with Toyota's New Era Business Strategy in the mid-1990s involved several new concepts in retailing and interactive marketing.
Pflughaupt, who has been in his new job about four months, spoke with Automotive News' Los Angeles Bureau Chief Mark Rechtin about the future of Toyota brand marketing.
