CHICAGO -- General Motors will chuck the name Grand Prix for the new mid-sized, rear-drive Pontiac sedan arriving next January. Instead, it will be called the G8.
Meanwhile, GM will retain the Malibu name for the redesigned Chevrolet sedan debuting this fall. Chevy executives had considered a name change.
"Sometimes we in the industry underestimate what it takes to get a new name out there," said Troy Clarke, president of GM North America. "Doubling the advertising or promotional expenses is probably the minimum. It is a sizable investment."
