Re: "Ford should look backward to find way forward" (editorial, July 31).
I could not agree more with your opinion that Ford should bring back Philip Caldwell, though I think you also should have mentioned Donald Petersen in the same sentence. They worked together with a harmony that was most unusual for the auto industry.
With Caldwell focusing on reducing overhead and streamlining the entire organization, Petersen was able to stay focused on product-development issues.
To me, the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s were truly the golden years for Ford. You had the GT, the SVO, the Taurus, the Turbocoupe, the Supercoupe, etc.
Hopefully, the new man at the top, Alan Mulally, and (Ford's president of the Americas) Mark Fields can work the same magic as Caldwell and Petersen.
