Great Wall Motor Co. aims to begin exporting to former Soviet states in eastern Europe this year, company executives say. Plans to export to western Europe and the United States are in the works, but no date has been set, they say.
"We have all the certifications to export to Europe," says an executive in the company's research institute. But for U.S. sales, he says, "We are still working on some issues, especially emissions and safety."
Great Wall spokesman Shang Yugui says the first model to be exported to the former Soviet states will be an SUV called the Hover, which sells in China for the equivalent of about $13,800.
Great Wall makes pickups, SUVs and vans.
In 2005 the automaker exported 18,500 vehicles to the Middle East, Africa, South America and other markets with emissions and safety standards lower than those in the United States and Europe.
