To the Editor:
I must comment on Joe Kimmel's fuel economy report for his 1950 Ford car ("His 1950 Ford was a gas sipper," Aug. 7, Letters).
- Ford advertised the V-8 engine as 100 hp in 1950. The engine was 239.4 cubic inches.
The overdrive car had a 4:10 axle ratio, and the car weighed about 3,000 pounds.
- Road test reports on the 1950 Ford sedan, with manual transmission and overdrive, reported 18-20 mpg at a steady 60 mph highway cruising; 0 to 60 mph time was 13.5 seconds at best.
- Around town, mileage was reported to be 15 mpg.
- Test reports showed speedometers were off by 7-8 mph (indicated 70 was really 62).
Maybe Kimmel's car was exceptional -- but phenomenal, I don't believe.
