Land Rover Design Director Geoff Upex will retire at year end, the automaker said Monday, Aug. 14.
Upex's duties are being handed to Gerry McGovern, who is director of advanced design for Land Rover. McGovern, 50, takes his new position immediately, the automaker said.
Upex, 54, worked for Land Rover for 23 years. He was named design director in 2000, when Ford Motor Co. acquired Land Rover from BMW AG. Upex has played a key role in design overhaul of the automaker's lineup -- the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery LR3.
Upex will stay with the company through year end as Land Rover launches the redesigned Freelander LR2.
