What makes a man a real man? Hummer's ad agency, Modernista, is on the case . . . but seems to be having a tough time tracking down clues.
Hummer learned that you shouldn't make light of male virility after it put out a TV commercial for the H3 in July that concluded with the tag line "Restore Your Manhood."
The spot depicts two guys in a supermarket checkout line. One is buying tofu and vegetables, the other a mountain of red meat. Guy No. 1, apparently, is a wimp who sees the light and goes out and buys a Hummer. Real manhood, it would seem, is about driving a 4,700-pound behemoth to the supermarket.
"A few dozen" calls from offended viewers to Hummer's customer service center led the brand to drop the "Restore Your Manhood" slogan from the commercial after a two-week run, says Hummer spokeswoman Dayna Hart. The spot's equally puzzling new tag line: "Restore the Balance."
