DETROIT -- Les Viland, an automotive engineer who was one of the industry's early experts on fuel economy, died May 30 in Livonia, Mich. He was 94. Among his accomplishments: Viland was one of two drivers of an American Motors Corp. Rambler that achieved a record 32.09 mpg in a NASCAR-sanctioned run from Los Angeles to New York in 1956.
