Kudos to the Ford Motor Minority Dealers Association, which is moving to control its own destiny by establishing a new membership fee based on the number of vehicles each dealer sells.
The association has been funded by dues collected from members, plus aid from Ford Motor Co. The automaker's donations have dwindled recently, just as times have become tougher for some dealers.
The proposed fee would tax members $15 for each car and truck sold; each member would pay according to his or her means.
Reducing the association's dependence on factory subsidies will save Ford a little money just when it needs it most, and it will demonstrate the minority dealers' self-reliance.
