MUNICH, Germany -- Schefenacker, a German lighting technology specialist, is intensifying development of light-emitting diode, or LED, technologies for headlamps.
Some of the technologies are undergoing test trials.
The company will launch production versions of LED daytime running lights with the 2007 Audi S6. Schefenacker says the optical design it developed is giving it an edge over the competition.
Hybrid systems already are a reality. They use high-intensity discharge technology for high- and low-beam lights and LED modules for blinkers, running lights and parking lights.
Schefenacker is applying an active cooling process to cut heat buildup in the LED modules. It also is developing a way to defrost lens coverings.
Schefenacker is based in Schwaikheim, Germany. The family-owned company expects regular production in about two years, with performance comparable to high-intensity discharge headlights.
