WASHINGTON -- Fresh steps are being taken to recover possibly faulty Firestone tires that were missed in massive recalls in 2000 and 2001.
The recalled tires have been linked to more than 200 fatal crashes, mostly of Ford Explorer SUVs.
Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC is sending additional notices to vehicle owners, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a consumer advisory last week.
A consulting firm, Safety Research & Strategies Inc., complained in June to NHTSA that some tires, often spares that were not among the more than 12 million returned, are still in use and may be causing additional serious crashes.
