Desperate times call for desperate measures. But rump government may cross the line.
Unable to get the Republican-controlled Congress to consider their bills, several Democratic lawmakers held their own "roundtable" hearing last week on legislation to address "the crisis in the U.S. auto industry."
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and AFL-CIO lawyer Damon Silvers were among the "witnesses" for the measures. One bill, by U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., would limit the ability of companies to use bankruptcy to undo the wage and benefit provisions of union contracts while paying big executive bonuses.
Finally, although electioneering is off-limits in government buildings, Gettelfinger offered this closing: "We have an opportunity to fix these issues. We need to be politically involved. We have a chance this fall."
