Mark Norman spent most of his career helping to move the metal, for Ford Motor Co. and for DaimlerChrysler.
Now he wants you to rent instead.
On July 1 he becomes CEO of Flexcar, a company that encourages people to avoid the headaches of vehicle ownership by renting a vehicle by the hour when they need one.
Flexcar rents cars and trucks in seven U.S. metropolitan areas and plans to go national. As part of the new push, it's moving its headquarters to Washington, D.C., from Seattle and is installing new executives, including Norman, 38.
A company statement says high gasoline prices, other hassles of vehicle ownership and environmental concerns make Flexcar "the right idea at the right time."
Norman previously was DaimlerChrysler's CEO for Canada and its vice president for global sales and marketing.
