WASHINGTON -- A pair of General Motors sedans, the Pontiac G6 and Buick Lucerne, got the top score of five stars in the latest rollover tests by the government.
In announcing results last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration emphasized the progress it says the industry is making to keep light trucks from tipping over. Among 2006 SUVs that were rated, 42 percent got four stars, compared with 34 percent in 2005.
NHTSA suggested some credit goes to wider use of electronic stability control. But some light trucks without stability control, such as a four-wheel-drive Ford Expedition, earned a four-star rating. Others with stability control, such as 2wd and 4wd Nissan Xterras, got three stars.
