Gasoline prices continue to rise, in lockstep with surging crude oil prices.
The price for a barrel of crude oil closed on the New York Mercantile Exchange at $75.17 Friday, a record. The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.86 a gallon on Friday. That's up 7 cents from three days earlier.
One month ago, the average selling price for a gallon of unleaded was $2.51. One year ago, regular unleaded was on average $2.22 a gallon.
The average price for diesel fuel also is climbing. The average price on Friday was $2.87 a gallon. That's a 6-cent jump in three days. One month ago, the average selling price was $2.66 a gallon. One year ago, it was $2.35 a gallon, according to AAA, of Hawthorne, Fla.

Residents in Kirkwood, Calif., on Friday saw the highest per-gallon gasoline prices in the United States, $3.57 for regular unleaded. The lowest price spotted for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.26 a gallon in Murray, Utah, according to GasPriceWatch.com.
The Web site uses volunteer spotters and has recorded more than 374,000 prices this week.
