DETROIT -- Many of the toys and innovations taken for granted in today's cars and trucks were viewed as breakthrough technologies just a few years ago.
Since 1995, the Automotive News PACE Awards helped unveil many of these technologies to the world while giving the unheralded automotive engineering community a place in the spotlight.
"I think it really serves a valuable purpose in the industry," says Dave Cole, president of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"It does give suppliers recognition for innovation. Largely, suppliers are almost unknown, even within the industry," he said.
Looking back over a decade of PACE awards, some of those winning innovations have had far-reaching effects. Here are some examples.
