NECKARSULM, Germany - Audi is considering adding more engine configurations for its S-model performance vehicles, including more turbocharged and diesel engines.
"The next generation of the S6 could get a diesel," said Kirstin Englhardt, project manager for the new Audi S6. Current Audi diesel engines use piezo injection technology.
Audi is launching its S6 car with a 5.2-liter V-10 gasoline engine, which is capable of producing 435 hp.
The engine is based on the one in the Lamborghini Gallardo and is in the Audi S8.
Audi will install a naturally aspirated V-8 engine in the S4. Like most of the previous S models, its predecessor was turbocharged.
A turbocharged engine also will be used in the next S3.
The S3, which goes into production in mid-September, will receive a 2.0-liter, TFSI engine, capable of 265 hp. That engine was chosen in place of a naturally aspirated V-6.
The S6 will be offered exclusively with an automatic transmission.
