CarMax Inc., which has been involved in a lawsuit challenging the legality of Texas blue laws since 1998, has decided to close its Texas stores on Sundays. The move was to take effect on Sunday, March 26.
It is in response to a district court judge's ruling upholding the law that limits weekend hours of Texas auto dealerships. Four stores in the company's Houston market had been closed on Sundays, a CarMax spokeswoman says. But the company also has one store in San Antonio, one in Austin and four in its Dallas/Fort Worth market.
The law allows dealerships to be open on Saturday or Sunday but not both during the same week.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, CarMax says it does not believe the closings will have an adverse effect on the company's financial position, liquidity or results of operations, but "sales in the Texas market may be adversely affected."
