The machinists and aerospace workers union has launched an organizing drive at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc. in Vance, Ala. The nonunion Mercedes plant, which employs about 4,000 workers, was targeted unsuccessfully by UAW organizers in 1999 and 2000. It has had no organizing activity since.
Don Barker, local campaign organizer for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said that his union was approached by Mercedes workers looking for alternatives to UAW representation.
Mercedes spokeswoman Linda Sewell said: "We're not aware that there's any campaign going on at the plant."
