Threats to Nigeria's oil production have pushed crude oil prices upward. Crude oil was selling at $63.25 a barrel on Friday, nearly a $2 increase since Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $2.26 a gallon on Friday. That is a 2-cent jump from three days earlier. One month ago regular unleaded was selling for $2.35 a gallon. One year ago the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded was $1.92, according to AAA, of Hawthorne, Fla.
The average price for diesel fuel also rose. Americans were paying an average of $2.56 a gallon on Friday, up a penny from Tuesday. One month ago diesel fuel was selling for an average of $2.58 a gallon. One year ago the average price was $2.16 a gallon.
AAA surveys 85,000 self-serve stations across the country and posts its findings on www.fuelgaugereport.com.
The highest price found for regular unleaded was in Coronado, Calif., at $2.89 a gallon. The lowest price was $1.89 a gallon, in Portland, Ore., according to GasPriceWatch.com
The Web site uses volunteer spotters and has recorded more than 296,000 spotters this week.
