DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. is extending Ford Taurus production at its doomed Atlanta assembly plant through October. The Atlanta plant had been scheduled to stop making the Taurus sedan on Aug. 31. The Atlanta plant manager notified the work force of the extension in a letter, said Danny Sparks, plant chairman for UAW Local 882. The final Taurus production date is now expected to be Oct. 27.
Ford said in January that the Atlanta plant is one of seven assembly plants slated for closing as part of its Way Forward restructuring plan for North America. A Ford spokeswoman would say only that the Atlanta plant would be idled during the second half of 2006.
