The personnel department at Ford Motor Co. handles a lot of paperwork. But the name on this job application must have raised some eyebrows: "Henry Ford."
Henry Ford III, actually.
The 26-year-old great-great-grandson of the company founder soon will start a job in labor relations -- likely to be a hot area, since the current UAW contract expires next year.
The new guy is the oldest son of Edsel Ford II, the son of former Ford Motor Chairman Henry Ford II. (Henry II's father was Edsel Ford, son of the founder.)
Henry Ford III, known as "Sonny" within the family, spent the last two years teaching middle school in Alexandria, Va. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 2002 with a history degree.
Sonny Ford is the second family member in his generation to join the company. Elena Ford is Ford Motor's director of North America product marketing, planning and strategy. Henry Ford II was her grandfather, too.
"I am a proud papa," Edsel Ford II said of his son's new job. But he said he warned his son that the right last name isn't enough to guarantee success. "Like my father said to me, there are no crown princes at Ford," he said -- and that will be true with the fifth generation as well: "They're going to have to make it on their own."
