Class 4 through 8 heavy-truck sales posted a healthy 8.7 percent increase in January 2006 compared with January 2005. Truckmakers sold 38,727 vehicles last month compared with 35,621 during January of last year.
Ford Motor Co. saw the biggest surge in the segment, with a sales increase of 92.4 percent. Much of that gain stemmed from the near tripling of Class 4 sales, from 1,038 units in January 2005 to 3,554 units in January 2006.
Freightliner surpassed International for overall truck sales in the month. Freightliner sold 9,702 units, up 2 percent. Much of the gain took place from Class 8 sales -- 6,327 in January compared with 5,625 the previous year.
International posted a 9.2 percent drop, down to 8,649 units. Mack reported a 25.2 percent increase, selling 1,956 units in January 2006, all of it in Class 8.
Class 8 trucks showed an overall 5.3 percent increase compared with January 2005.
