NUEVO VALLARTA, Mexico -- Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc. plans to open an office in Detroit this month to target original-equipment business with U.S. automakers.
The office initially will have a staff of two sales engineers, David Hudrlik, senior vice president of sales, said here during a meeting with dealers last month.
"We are committed now to develop OE business in the U.S. -- good, profitable OE business," he said. "We are not going to put the Kumho brand on an entry-level vehicle. We will put them on mid-range to high-range vehicles."
Although no contracts have been announced, Kumho officials said one of the deals will be an 18-inch tire for a future model built on the Chrysler Sebring platform. They also said they will supply a 19-inch tire that will be on a high-end crossover vehicle to be introduced by Chrysler in 2008.
