MILAN, Italy -- Italian motorcycle maker Piaggio has been asked to consider buying DaimlerChrysler's troubled Smart small-car unit, according to a spokesman for Piaggio's controlling shareholder.
The shareholder, IMMSI group, confirmed that it was approached by Goldman Sachs, an investment bank representing DaimlerChrysler.
"Goldman Sachs contacted IMMSI group to gauge its interest toward a deal regarding the Smart brand," an IMMSI spokesman in Milan told Automotive News Europe.
DaimlerChrysler has denied that it plans to sell Smart.
