What a dumb name for a motor vehicle. It says nothing of history, appearance, manufacturing technique or purpose.
But the word has caught the fancy of the automotive world. Even Automotive News has succumbed. We used to call them sport wagons, but now they are known as crossovers in this publication.
Some in the industry are trying to set up a new segment: CUV, or crossover utility vehicle.
You have my take on "crossover." Now, let's look at "utility vehicle." To me, a utility vehicle is a sturdy work truck that carries the tools and equipment needed to install, maintain and repair such necessities as furnaces, telephones, air conditioners and electrical systems. In other words, utilities for utilities.
OK, I've trashed just about everything in sight. Do I have a name for those vehicles that are the fastest growing class in the auto industry?
You bet I do: Station wagons.
