To the Editor:
Taxpayers did not cause the near-bankruptcy of the Big 3 from excessive UAW pay and benefits. It would not be fair to ask taxpayers to subsidize the golden pay of UAW workers and retirees.
The Big 3 lost half their market over a 35-year period by building uninspired vehicles with less than ideal quality, taking the customer for granted and by not saying no to excessive union demands.
Rick Wagoner, GM's CEO, can rationalize all he wants about excessive health care costs, but those costs can be reduced quickly by making UAW workers absorb one-third of their health care costs during their working careers, then 50 percent after early retirement until age 65 and 100 percent once Medicare kicks in.
UAW workers must join the ranks of the self-insured along with most of us working stiffs and retirees.
