DETROIT -- DaimlerChrysler AG will open an assembly plant in South Carolina to produce vans, the state's department of commerce said on Monday.
Production of the redesigned Dodge Sprinter van is expected to begin in North Charleston, S.C., in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to the state.
The automaker will adapt an existing facility to assemble the vans.
The next-generation vehicles produced in South Carolina will replace the current Sprinter model in early 2007. Since 2001, the Sprinter has been on sale in the United States under the Freightliner and Dodge brands.
DaimlerChrysler will initially invest $35 million and employ 220 initially, according to the state.
