Dieter Zetsche is now the brains behind Mercedes-Benz, and soon all of DaimlerChrysler. So what's he going to do about Smart -- the European small-car brand that's piling up losses?
The German monthly magazine Manager reported last week that Zetsche is open to selling all or part of Smart to another company. The magazine cited company insiders.
But Zetsche, in Las Vegas last week for a farewell party with Chrysler group dealers, didn't sound like he was in a selling mood. There are "no new developments whatsoever in this regard," he said about the report.
On the other hand, Zetsche said, DaimlerChrysler will decide within six months whether to bring the Smart brand to the United States. (Yes, we've heard that one a few times before.)
