Surely Bill Hughes ("SUVs, big pickups just waste gasoline," Letters, Oct. 17) wouldn't suggest that the 4,000-mile, once-in-a-lifetime trip that my 16-year-old son and I took to Moab, Utah, for a Jeep Jamboree was a vulgar waste of fuel.
Yep, we used a ton of diesel, averaged 9 mpg for the tow out and back and made memories that very few fathers and sons ever will.
To paraphrase a famous ad:
New Ram 3500: $42,000
444 gallons of diesel @ $3.50 a gallon: $1,554
10 days of quality time with 16-year-old son: priceless
I guess "vulgarity" and "waste" are sometimes just a state of mind.
