Audi AG will call its new sports car the R8.
The all-wheel-drive, two-door car will be based on the Le Mans quattro concept car shown at the 2003 Frankfurt auto show.
Production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2006.
The car will go on sale in the second quarter of 2007 in Germany. It will most likely arrive in the United States in mid- to late 2007, according to an Audi of America Inc. spokeswoman.
The R8 will cost "near $100,000," she said.
The mid-engine two-seater will share components with the awd Lamborghini Gallardo.
Audi says it will invest about $32.7 million to produce the car at its Neckarsulm, Germany, factory.
The R8 will get an eight-cylinder engine and a larger powerplant that may be based on the Gallardo's V-10 powerplant.
Audi won't disclose annual R8 production targets, but it likely will be under 25,000 units.
