Renault's new Clio was chosen European Car of the Year for 2006, just ahead of the Volkswagen Passat.
The Clio earned 256 points from the contest's jury members, five more than the Passat.
The 2006 title is the sixth for Renault.
The Alfa Romeo 159 and the BMW 3-series finished third and fourth, respectively, in the voting. The Mazda5 finished fifth.
The second-generation Toyota Prius is the current European Car of the Year.
