LAS VEGAS -- Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. will add a Galant Ralliart model next spring. It will join the Lancer Ralliart as the only Ralliart models sold in this country.
Ralliart is the motor sports arm of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Ralliart models have more powerful engines and sportier styling than their siblings.
Mitsubishi also revealed at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show last week that it will roll out a Ralliart performance parts and accessories program for North America.
The company would not say how much more power the Ralliart Galant will have over other Galant models. The Ralliart Lancer makes 162 hp vs. 120 hp for the base Lancer.
Galant sales in the United States, down 21.4 percent through 10 months this year to 29,495, have disappointed Mitsubishi.
Wayne Killen, vice president of marketing for Mitsubishi North America, says the performance model VR4 Galant, which was discontinued in the 1990s, was a popular model for the company.
Killen says the Ralliart performance parts program will begin immediately for the Lancer Evolution performance car. Those parts will come from Japan.
He says the company will begin working with suppliers in this country to produce U.S.-made Ralliart parts. He says the first vehicle to get the U.S. Ralliart parts will be the 2006 Eclipse coupe. Those parts will be available in the spring.
