DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is boosting the price of its Prius hybrid $490 from the final 2005 price when the 2006 model goes on sale midmonth.
The sticker price for a base Prius will be $22,305 for the '06 model. The 2005 model started at $21,390 when it went on sale. Toyota raised the price of the 2005 model twice after it hit the market.
Part of the extra cost for the 2006 Prius is a $40 shipping increase. Shipping for the 2006 Prius is $580, compared with $540 for the '05 model.
The 2006 Prius has restyled headlights and taillights and an updated grille. Toyota says the gasoline-electric powertrain gets an EPA estimated 60 mpg in city driving and 51 mpg on the highway.
Through the first 10 months of this year Toyota has sold 90,981 Priuses, an increase of 117.5 percent compared with the first 10 months of 2004.
All prices include shipping.
