It is understandable that some dealers are confused, even angered, by the uneven way in which some automakers enforce employee-discount regulations, especially discounts to dealership employees. After all, factories encourage dealers to sell as many vehicles as possible. Some makers have used employee-pricing discounts as national campaigns.
But that doesn't let dealers off the hook for fraud, and that's what it is when dealership employees give discounts to consumers who don't deserve them.
Ford Motor Co.'s national crackdown should not have been a surprise to so many dealers. It's time for factories to enforce the rules consistently and for dealers to make sure their employees play by the rules.
