TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on Monday it had received more than 5,000 orders for its new Outlander SUV in Japan, double the monthly sales target, just two weeks after the car's launch.
Mitsubishi, Japan's only unprofitable automaker, had originally targeted sales of 2,000 vehicles per month.
The maker of the Pajero SUV said it had received some 2,500 orders for the Outlander before it went on sale on Oct. 17. Since the launch it had received more than 2,500 orders in less than two weeks, the automaker said in a statement.
Sales of new models in Japan tend to overshoot targets in the first few months and decline towards the end of the cycle.
The Outlander -- Mitsubishi Motors' first new model in Japan in almost 2½ years -- is scheduled to go on sale in North America in 2006 and in Europe the following year, a spokeswoman said.
