DETROIT -- The pinch at the pump has eased a bit for motorists, as the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has slid 6 cents since Friday, Oct. 7, to $2.87 on Tuesday morning.
Four days ago the average price was $2.93. It was $2.99 last month and $1.96 last year, according to AAA, of Hawthorne, Fla.
Diesel fuel was $3.20 a gallon -- the same as last Friday. It was $2.93 a month ago and $2.10 a year ago.
AAA surveys more than 85,000 self-serve filling stations daily and reports its findings on www.fuelgaugereport.com.
Gasoline prices have fallen or held steady, in part because crude oil dropped last week to about $62 a barrel on Friday, and was trading about $63 a barrel on Tuesday morning.
The highest price of unleaded gasoline, $3.78 a gallon, was found in Paia, Hawaii. The lowest price, $2.22 a gallon, was seen in Edmond, Okla., according to GasPriceWatch.com.
GasPriceWatch.com uses volunteer spotters and has recorded more than 211,000 prices this week.
