Bert Boeckmann built Galpin Motors around being different and by constantly improving the way he displays, sells and services vehicles. Boeckmann explained his business philosophy to Special Correspondent Jon F. Thompson.
What does being innovative mean to you?
It means forever working to improve, right down to the small details in the showroom and service department; looking for things that will make you different from the pack, something the customer would desire. It's wanting to work a little differently in everything you do. If you don't do that, why the hell are you needed?
How important is your location to the success of customizing? Would you have been as successful anywhere else in the country?
Innovative cars were born here in California. Having 12 months of sun makes a difference in having fun with a car. There's a lot more to invigorate you here. The lifestyle, the clothing - California accentuates being different, that's what I've seen.
What for you has been the bottom line of Galpinizing's success?
The benefits have been rather great for us. We've attracted customers who otherwise wouldn't come here.
