Doolan, 64, will be on Sonic's audit committee and its nominating and corporate governance committee. Sonic, a publicly held retailer in Charlotte, N.C., ranks No. 3 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 dealership groups in the United States.
Doolan retired from Volvo in March after almost three years as president. The company's North American sales grew during his tenure.
Before he joined Volvo, Doolan was executive director of Ford Motor Co.'s Premier Automotive Group. He also was president of BMW of North America LLC.
Doolan's term on the Sonic board expires in 2008.
Sonic reported $6.89 billion in total revenue last year. The company's 159 dealerships sold 138,753 new vehicles.
