DETROIT -- A few days of calm in the volatile crude-oil markets have resulted in stable prices at the gasoline pump.
The average cost for a gallon of unleaded gasoline stands at $2.31, according to AAA. That's down 1 cent from the record AAA price of Thursday, July 14.
But drivers are paying an average of $2.46 a gallon for diesel fuel, the highest price ever recorded by AAA.
The figures are not adjusted for inflation.
One year ago, unleaded gasoline was selling for an average of $1.92 a gallon. diesel fuel was $1.80 a gallon.
AAA surveys more than 60,000 self-serve gasoline stations daily and reports its findings at www.fuelgaugereport.com.
Death Valley, Calif., still has the most expensive gasoline at $3.10 a gallon, according to GasPriceWatch.com. The lowest price for a gallon of gasoline is found in Gaffney, S.C., at $1.99.
GasPriceWatch uses volunteer spotters who submit more than 72,000 prices a week.
